Gua Sha is an ancient Chinese medical healing method traditionally used on the body.
It originated in China and gradually spread throughout the rest of Asia, where variations of the technique are still practiced today.
The word “Gua” (刮) means to scrape
The word “Sha” (痧) combines the radical for sickness with that for sand, symbolizing the process of “scraping the sickness out.”
This practice has been documented in Chinese medicine texts for centuries and shares philosophical roots with acupuncture, both dating back to the Stone Age, when practitioners used smooth stones and animal bones to stimulate the body’s healing systems.
According to Jeffrey Yuen, a renowned authority on Classical Chinese Medicine, Gua Sha works by increasing white blood cell counts, stimulating the immune system, and activating the lymphatic and circulatory systems to support the body’s natural detoxification processes.
While traditionally used to release “stagnation” (Qi and Blood), modern understanding recognizes Gua Sha as a powerful technique that enhances microcirculation, reduces inflammation, and supports tissue regeneration
