What is the Lymphatic System?
The lymphatic system is a VITAL, yet so often overlooked, circulatory network that runs throughout your entire body acting like the body’s cleanup and filtration system. It connects directly to immune health, inflammation control and tissue health- hello anti-aging hack!! Unlike the cardiovascular system, which has the heart as a pump, the lymphatic system has no central pump. 1/3 of our lymph is located from the neck up!
It relies on breath (especially diaphragmatic breathing), hydration, nervous system regulation (need to be in parasympathetic, rest/ digest not fight or flight), lack of tension (think when you are holding a muscle tense- it is going to be hard for lymph fluid to flow), and manual stimulation to move fluid (what you are going to learn today!!).
It is slowed down by: Chronic stress, muscle tension, shallow breathing, dehydration, sedentary lifestyle.
What Does the Lymphatic System Do?
The primary function of this system is to act as your body’s internal waste management system removing cellular waste, inflammatory byproducts, toxins and pathogens.
It collects a clear, yellowish fluid called lymph, which is essentially the plasma that has seeped out of your blood vessels into your tissues.
It functions as a giant "cleanup crew," collecting and removing metabolic waste, cellular debris, toxins, excess fluid, and bacteria from your tissues.
This "murky, stagnant liquid" is transported to lymph nodes, which act as biological filtration stations. These nodes are packed with immune cells that clean the lymph before it's safely returned to the bloodstream.
How Does This Affect Your Skin?
When this system is stagnant, waste and excess fluid build up right below the skin's surface, manifesting as visible skin issues, typically from the collarbone up due to the concentration of lymph nodes in the neck and face.
Puffiness and facial Bloating:
Excess, unmoving lymph fluid creates visible swelling and puffiness, most noticeable around the eyes, jawline, and cheeks.
Acne, rosacea, eczema and Congestion:
When metabolic waste and bacteria aren't promptly removed, they linger in the tissue. Creating an environment where acne and other skin aliments can thrive.
Dark Circles, premature aging:
Stagnation in the delicate tissue around the eyes can lead to a buildup of fluid and cellular debris, which can contribute to the appearance of dark circles and under-eye bags. As for aging, it can allow for loss of elasticity , fine lines being more pronounced and accelerated overall aging of the skin.
The Glow and Structure:
Effective lymphatic drainage is responsible for that sought-after "glow" and defined look that practices like Gua Sha are famous for. When you remove this murky, stagnant liquid from just below the surface, the skin is instantly smoother, allowing your natural bone structure to shine through and creating a sculpted, defined look.
