How to Layer Your Skincare Products the Right Way
You could have the best skincare products in the world—but if you’re not using them in the right order (and at the right time of day), you’re missing out on a huge part of their benefits. The truth is: how you layer your products can make or break your results.
So let’s break it down.
Why Order Matters
Think of your skin like a sponge—it can only absorb so much at once. If you put a heavy product like an oil or thick cream on first, and then try to layer a lightweight serum on top, that serum isn’t going to reach your skin. It will just sit on top, wasting product and money. The right order ensures each product can do its job.
The Golden Rule: Thinnest to Thickest
As a general rule, you want to apply products starting with the thinnest textures and moving toward the thickest. This allows each layer to absorb properly and prevents lightweight actives from getting blocked by heavier occlusives.
Here’s a simple breakdown:
Cleanser – Always start with a clean base.
Toner or Mist – If you use one, this helps prep and hydrate the skin.- and so much more. Just be careful not to use one from over the counter, I see these damaging skin all the time.
Actives (Serums/Treatments) – These are your powerhouse ingredients like vitamin C, retinol, or exfoliating acids. Actives are ingredients that directly change or influence the skin on a cellular level, targeting things like acne, pigmentation, or fine lines. Most of the time, these should go on first (unless your esthetician advises otherwise).
Hydrating Serums – Think hyaluronic acid or peptides—these keep the skin plump and balanced.
Moisturizer – Locks everything in and supports the skin barrier.
Oil (optional) – The thickest layer, great for sealing everything in at night.
Sunscreen (daytime only) – The non-negotiable final step in your AM routine.
A Final Note
Everyone’s skin is different, and sometimes your esthetician will guide you to tweak this order for your specific skin goals. But if you remember thinnest to thickest, actives first, you’ll be on the right track to getting the full benefits from your products.
