My Take on Botox as a Holistic Esthetician
My Take on Botox as a Holistic Esthetician
First, this is not meant to shame you if you get Botox.
If you get Botox and love it, I support you. My goal isn't to tell anyone what they should or shouldn't do. My goal is to educate you, explain how I view aging as a holistic esthetician, and let you know there are other options if Botox isn't something you truly want.
I have so many clients tell me the same thing:
"I don't really want Botox... but all of my friends get it, and I feel like I have to."
If that's you, I want you to know there are other ways to support your skin.
One of my teachers explained Botox in a way that has stuck with me ever since. She compared it to putting beautiful wallpaper over a moldy wall. I absolutely loved that analogy because, to me, it perfectly describes Botox. It's a quick, temporary fix, but it doesn't get to the root cause of why you're experiencing signs of aging in the first place.
So...what is Botox?
Botox is a purified form of botulinum toxin that temporarily relaxes a muscle. When that muscle can't contract the way it normally does, the wrinkle above it softens or temporarily disappears.
The effects usually last around three to four months as your body naturally metabolizes the product and muscle movement gradually returns. That's why most people continue getting treatments several times a year.
So what does that actually mean for your face?
Yes, your wrinkles can instantly look smoother.
But in my opinion, that's the only benefit. More research is continuing to come out looking at what repeated Botox treatments over many years may mean for the face.
How?
Over time, when a muscle remains dormant for long periods, it can develop muscle atrophy. This means the muscle gradually becomes smaller and weaker from lack of use, which I believe can contribute to an aged appearance in those areas over time.
The muscles in your face and neck don't work independently—they work together as one connected system. When one or multiple muscles become dormant, the surrounding muscles may compensate by working harder. In my treatment room, I often notice these patterns of compensation and tension.
For example, if someone has been getting Botox in their forehead for years, I often notice more tension and signs of aging developing in the lower face and neck. That's one of the reasons I always look at the entire face instead of focusing on one wrinkle. It’s all connected!
Now let's talk about lines. What actually causes them?
Those little lines that come and go?
They're often superficial dehydration lines.
They are not true wrinkles!
Many of them can improve with the right skincare, hydration, and professional treatments. I can often get rid of them during a facial.
So what about the deeper lines that stay?
Those can be influenced by long-term dehydration, years of repetitive facial movement, chronic muscle tension, genetics (which we can absolutely still support!), poor posture, stagnant lymphatic fluid, and many other factors.
So how do we get to the root cause?
This is the part that excites me.
My professional opinion, when I see someone with Botox but noticeable aging or tension in the neck, is...
"Oh my gosh...I could help that!"
I don't believe healthy aging comes from freezing a muscle.
I believe it comes from understanding why that muscle is working so hard in the first place and helping retrain the muscles and soft tissues to function more efficiently so you can age beautifully—not just in your face, but in your neck too.
Wrinkles don't just appear overnight.
Let's get to the root cause instead of simply covering the symptom.
My favorite ways to support aging naturally
✨ Pay attention to how much you're using your facial muscles.
If you are constantly overusing your muscles, you want to start becoming aware of this and trying to retrain yourself! I promise its possible with time.
✨ Try Frownies.
I love them because they help bring awareness to repetitive facial movements while encouraging your muscles to relax as you sleep.
✨Use Myo-Cyte Plus.
This has been a game changer for myself, clients and followers of mine. It is a spot treatment that you use in the areas you would get Botox. It has peptides in it that help smooth the muscle and reduce fine lines like crazy!
✨ Hydrate.
Inside and out.
Those little lines that seem to appear one day and disappear the next are often dehydration lines. The more hydrated your skin is, the healthier, plumper, and more resilient it can look. For hydration, products such ashydraremedy, hydrabalance gel, and mixi drops will be game changers.
✨ Learn facial massage and Gua Sha.
This is exactly why I created my classes.
Right now, I have classes teaching you how to use Gua Sha properly, release tension in the neck, improve lymphatic drainage, and support healthier facial movement.
There are many more classes to come because this is what I'm truly passionate about.
To me, this is getting to the root.
Not covering the wallpaper.
Actually caring for the wall underneath.
At the end of the day, aging is a privilege.
I'm not trying to stop you from aging.
I'm trying to help you age well.
To support healthy skin.
To release unnecessary tension.
To nourish your skin from the inside and outside.
And to help you feel confident in your face—whether you choose Botox or not.
That's what holistic esthetics means to me.
