How to Create a Non-Toxic Home: A Simple, Stress-Free Approach
At the beginning of my health journey, I started noticing just how many toxic ingredients are in everyday household items. From Teflon-coated nonstick pans that can leach toxins into your food, to synthetic fragrances in laundry detergents that may disrupt hormones, to synthetic scented candles polluting the air.
I was determined to take care of my body and reduce autoimmune symptoms so I could actually function and live my daily life. But here’s the thing: this didn’t happen overnight.
Start Slow: The Key to Creating a Non-Toxic Home
I didn’t replace everything all at once. Every change came gradually. For example:
When I ran out of laundry detergent, I researched which brands were safe and replaced it with a non-toxic option.
I slowly started buying non-toxic cookware.
Every purchase became intentional—no more picking up things just because they looked nice.
This slow, thoughtful approach helped me create a healthier home without feeling overwhelmed and having me feel empowered when I buy things! I realized that there are a few massive companies that own so much of what is sold in your everyday stores, and they don’t care what is in it!
Why a Non-Toxic Home Matters: The Fish Tank Analogy
Think of your body like a fish in a fish tank.
A little bit of toxins enters the tank, and the fish is still thriving.
More toxins enter over time, and the fish starts showing small symptoms.
Eventually, if the tank keeps accumulating toxins with no way to filter them out, the fish gets sicker.
Western medicine often gives the fish a “pill” while leaving the tank dirty. Eastern approaches take the opposite route: they clean the environment, filtering out the toxins slowly so the fish can thrive again.
This is exactly what we’re doing when we create a non-toxic home: we’re carefully curating the air, water, surfaces, and products around us so our bodies can function optimally. It is okay to have toxins; we just don’t want to overload the body with them. When you start experiencing symptoms, such as skin rashes, headaches, brain fog, you can most likely contribute them to the dirty fish tank. (of course, genetics make up 5-10% of symptoms and emotions can contribute as well).
What a Non-Toxic Home Looks Like
Creating a non-toxic home doesn’t mean perfection. I still have toxic clothing, makeup, furniture, and paint in my space. The goal is not to have fear, it’s to have education and intention with every purchase.
Here’s what I focus on and prioritize:
Fragrances: I'm intentional about the candles I buy and laundry products. You won’t see me using Yankee Candle Candles, room sprays, air fresheners or Tide!
Body care: I care about what soaps, body washes, deodorant, and toothpaste I use.
Cookware: Cookware matters a lot to me because it’s what we are putting into our bodies daily. Pots, pans, and utensils- what I use to heat my food and the oils/butter I cook with.
Cleaning products: Everything from surface sprays to dish soap! Another thing used daily that matters to me.
Water: filtration and quality. I limit drinking out of plastic water bottles, I do NOT drink tap water, I don’t use cheap water filters for drinking water- it needs to filter out all of the contaminants that are in my water and then I add minerals so my body absorbs it! (you can go to the EWG website and look up what is in your tap water… it is alarming to say the least.)
Over time, these intentional swaps make a big impact on overall health.
How I Built My Non-Toxic Home Gradually
Replace items when they run out – no rush.
Research and invest in non-toxic replacements as your budget allows. Keep in mind that many companies can “green wash”. It means they are marketing that it's clean, but it's actually not!
Be intentional with purchases – ask yourself if you really need it, and what its ingredients are.
Understand your limits – it’s okay if some toxic items remain; your body can handle small amounts.
Focus on education over fear – knowing why you’re choosing certain products empowers you.
Final Thoughts
Creating a non-toxic home is about progress, not perfection. Every intentional swap you make is a filter for your “fish tank,” slowly reducing the toxic load so your body can thrive.
You don’t need to replace everything at once. Start with small, manageable steps, and over time you’ll notice the difference in your energy, health, and skin.
Creating a healthier, non-toxic home doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Here’s everything I use in my own home, organized by category. This is a mix of trial-and-error favorites and intentional swaps that have made a real difference in my health and daily life.
